¿"GARGANTA PROFUNDA" desenmascarado? Mark Felt, antiguo número 2 del FBI, afirma que fue el misterioso confidente de Woodward y Bernstein en el escándalo Watergate. Los dos reporteros del Washington Post han emitido una nota en la que ni confirman ni desmienten la autoconfesión. Habrá que ver que sale de todo esto.

LA LISTA NEGRA de Hollywood -y en general, el coco senador McCarthy, el Comité de Actividades Antiamericanas y tal- responde a un episodio ciertamente poco digno de ser alabado en la historia de los EEUU. Pero sin exagerar, porque también es uno de los más distorsionados, casi diría mitificados, por parte de la intelligentsia yanqui, y por mimetismo la europea.

Y ya era hora que alguien hiciese que esa lista fuese algo menos negra: interesantísimo artículo de Clive Davis en el Times de Londres a partir de un irreverente libro de Ron y Allis Radosh: "Red Star Over Hollywood" (Estrella Roja en Hollywood), que espero leer pronto (por supuesto, escribo irreverente porque destroza varios mitos de la religión biempensante). Leed el artículo en el propio blog de Davis, y el comentario de Roger Simon que, además de amigo y blogger, es un veterano de la meca del cine.

Artists, even empty-headed actors, should not be denied a livelihood because of their political beliefs. Civil Rights was a front-burner issue before Pearl Harbor; after war was declared, Civil Rights was "divisive." And, yes, Finland was to blame for the Soviet invasion of Finland.

The Radoshes have done an estimable job filling in the blanks with the names of communist agents and officials and the specifics of their meddling. The result is going to make Barbra Streisand crazy. But the best thing of all (well, apart from making Barbra crazy) is that the Radoshes are both nuanced and fair. They know how to separate the simpletons, like matinee idol John Garfield, from the truly loathsome, like playwright Lillian Hellman. And they are no kinder to the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC), with its yahoo anti-Semite chairman, than to the communists and Fellow Travelers.

¿QUE ES lo que realmente piensan los árabes?

What do Arabs really think about the problems that afflict them, and how is this related to the issues Islamic terrorists are fighting and dying (and killing) for? A recent "Opinion Survey of the Arab Street 2005" by Al Arabiya news network provides some interesting answers. The survey sought to see what Arabs thought about the relative lack of economic progress in the Arab world. In answer to the question, “What is stalling development in the Arab world?,” 81 percent chose "Governments are unwilling to implement change and reform", 8 percent citing "The ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict," 7 percent "Civil society is failing to convince governments", and 4 percent chose "Terrorism".

Another question, "What is the fastest way to achieve development in the Arab world?", had 67 percent choosing "Ensuring the rule of law through justice and law enforcement", 23 percent chose "Enhancing freedom of speech", and 10 percent chose "Resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict".

Islamic terrorists represent a small minority of Arab thinking, and interests. But most Arab media and governments, for obvious reasons, avoid the “bad government” issues and instead concentrate on the Arab-Israeli conflict as the cause of all that is bad in the Arab world.

UNA DE LAS CLAVES de lo ocurrido el pasado domingo en Francia la da Hermann Tertsch (ver comentario 14):

Hasta aquí hemos llegado y quien ahora no vea y no oiga las señales de alarma en Europa debe de estar muerto y si no, merece estarlo políticamente. El electorado francés ha rechazado por 54,68% en contra y el 45,32 a favor el Tratado constitucional de la Unión Europea. El pasado 25 de febrero, el Congreso de Francia, la unión de las dos cámaras, había votado a favor del texto con 730 votos a favor y tan solo 66 en contra. Las cifras hablan alto y claro sobre la ruptura total de sintonía entre los ciudadanos y sus representantes. En Alemania, el 12 de mayo, el Bundestag aprobó la Constitución por abrumadores 569 votos a favor con solo 23 en contra. ¿Alguien cree que los ciudadanos habrían respondido de forma similar?

Es esta desconexión entre las élites políticas y la ciudadanía la que ha hecho saltar por los aires -o debería hecerlo- el dulce sueño de esa Europa a quien los exégetas del referéndum se empeñan en mantener anestesiada. Leed el resto del artículo, aunque hay algo en lo que no estoy de acuerdo: como dijo por correo-e mi buen amigo Golan, se ha convertido en un lugar común afirmar que el 55% para el "no" es el voto del extremismo. Como todo lugar común, suele ser un mito: sencillamente no cabe en la cabeza pensar que el 55% de los franceses sean extremistas.

The crowd, led by Omar Bakri Muhammad and Yassar al-Siri, were protesting against the alleged desecration of a Qur’an by American military interrogators at Guantanamo Bay. This followed claims by Newsweek magazine that a copy of the Qur’an had been put down a toilet. American and British flags were also burnt, and the protestors chanted calls for violence against the US and UK. Amongst the protestors were about 50 women, some of whom had brought their children.

At the time this protest took place, Newsweek had retracted their story about the alleged incident in Guantanamo Bay. Yet the cross-burning still took place, and has caused little interest in the British media.

Riots in Afghanistan about the same issue had already caused the deaths of 16 people.

VIOLENTOS COMBATES en Husaybah, en el oeste de Iraq. ¿Cómo, que no sabéis nada de ello? ¿Que los medios españoles no han considerado oportuno informar de ello? Natural: son combates entre los muchachotes de Zarqawi y tribus sunníes locales (sí, esas que según los enteraos están a favor de los "gloriosos resistentes"):

For four days this month, US marines were onlookers at just the kind of fight they had hoped to see: a battle between suspected followers of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a foreign-born insurgent, and Iraqi Sunni tribal fighters at the western frontier town of Husaybah. In clashes sparked by the assassination of a tribal sheik, which was commissioned by Zarqawi, the foreign insurgents and Iraqi tribal fighters pounded one another with weapons and mortars in the streets of Husaybah as the US military watched from a distance, tribal members and the US military said.

[...] On the al-Zarqawi side, 11 foreign fighters were killed outright, plus an unknown number of other foreign fighters and their Iraqi allies in US bombing runs after local tribes tipped off their location to the Americans.

The fighting at Husaybah was a dramatic sign of the fractures in support and allegiance the foreign fighters are experiencing, several Iraqi political leaders and other Iraqis said. The battles also revealed what appears to be fissures within the network’s top leadership, they said.

El texto (avalado por el Institut Municipal d´Educació) se inscribe dentro del discurso oficial de la izquierda reaccionaria, predispuesta a cualquier tipo de falacia con el fin de apuntalar sus dogmas. BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq and Washington's most wanted man in the country, has been wounded, a web posting said on Tuesday as it urged his followers to pray for him.

The statement, which U.S. officials said could be a ruse, was released on another day of violence in Iraq, with three U.S. soldiers and two Iraqis killed in car bombings in Baghdad.

"O nation of Islam... Pray for the healing of our Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi from an injury he suffered in the path of God," said the posting by al Qaeda Organization for Holy War in Iraq.

Hace tiempo que circulan rumores sin confirmar sobre esto. Pero de ahí a creerlo porque lo digan estos salvajes hay un buen trecho.

AYER ERA KEITH JOHNSON quien explicaba por qué dejó la izquierda; hoy John Rosenthal me envía la traducción al inglés que ha hecho de la entrevista que el semanario francés L'Express hizo recientemente a una verdadera heroína: Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Como sabéis, esta parlamentaria holandesa de origen somalí se considera una apóstata del Islam y está en el punto de mira de los islamofascistas. Por el mero hecho de haber abandonado el Islam (motivo más que suficiente para los más conspicuos representantes de la "religión de la paz") y por haber colaborado con Theo Van Gogh en el documental que le costó la vida.

Pero como dice John, esto es bien conocido; lo que no lo es tanto es el por qué está en otro punto de mira (figurativamente hablando, en este caso): la de sus correligionarios del partido laborista (socialdemócrata) holandés, que abandonó para pasar a las filas del partido liberal. L'Express le pregunta el motivo, y ella responde:

Because the left is exactly like the Muslims! I wanted to give priority to the defense of immigrant women who are victims of domestic violence. They said to me: “No, that’s not a priority! MIRAD LO QUE DICE Newsweek ahora:

According to Di Rita, when the first prisons were built for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo in early 2002, prison guards were instructed to respect the detainees’ religious rituals. The prisoners were given Qur’ans, which they hung from the walls of their cells in cotton surgical masks provided by the prison. Log entries by the guards indicate that in about a dozen cases, the detainees themselves somehow damaged their Qur’ans. In one case a prisoner allegedly ripped up a Qur’an; in another a prisoner tore the cover off his Qur’an. In three cases, detainees tried to stuff pages from their Qur’ans down their toilets, according to the Defense Department’s account of what is in the guards’ reports. (NEWSWEEK was not permitted to see the log items.) The log entries do not indicate why the detainees might have done this, said Di Rita, and prison commanders concluded that certain hard-core prisoners would try to agitate the other detainees by alleging disrespect for Muslim articles of faith.

In light of the controversy, one of these incidents bears special notice. Last week, NEWSWEEK interviewed Command Sgt. John VanNatta, who served as the prison’s warden from October 2002 to the fall of 2003. VanNatta recounted that in 2002, the inmates suddenly started yelling that the guards had thrown a Qur’an on or near an Asian-style squat toilet. The guards found an inmate who admitted that he had dropped his Qur’an near his toilet. According to VanNatta, the inmate then was taken cell to cell to explain this to other detainees to quell the unrest. But the incident could partly account for the multiple allegations among detainees, including one by a released British detainee in a lawsuit that claims that guards flushed Qur’ans down toilets.

Hay más detalles (via LGF). Son informaciones que aportan una luz muy distinta a lo que ellos mismos publicaron hace unas semanas. Lástima que venga demasiado tarde.

ACTUALIZACIÓN. También via LGF veo lo que opina el legendario Ben Bradlee, antiguo director del Washington Post y unánimemente respetado por su papel en el Watergate, incluso por los impermeables. Desgraciadamente no pongo demasiadas esperanzas en que escuchen lo que dice sobre este asunto.

¿RECORDÁIS la aclaración de Fernando Savater a la información publicada ayer sobre la carta con una supuesta oferta de tregua de ETA a Zapatero? Pues bien, llegó a la redacción del diario madrileño... desde La Moncloa, y con membrete de la presidencia del gobierno.

ABC señala hoy que "El texto firmado por Savater mezclaba conceptos y aludía a una carta a la que no se hacía referencia expresa en la información de este diario." Lo cual creo que deja meridianamente claro que no sólo fue transmitida desde La Moncloa, sino redactada desde allí...

Falta saber si con el conocimiento, o la aprobación, del filósofo vasco.

ACTUALIZACIÓN.

El filósofo Fernando Savater ha asegurado en una entrevista en 'Los desayunos' de TVE que, tras llamar a Zapatero para aclararle sus declaraciones sobre una oferta de ETA para abandonar las armas, desde Moncloa se ofrecieron a enviar su matización. La rectificación llegó a la redacción de 'ABC', según el diario, desde la "Secretaría de Estado de Comunicación del Palacio de la Moncloa y con el membrete de Presidencia del Gobierno".

Savater ha asegurado que al "ver el revuelo que se había creado" tras sus declaraciones se quedó "horrorizado" y llamó a Zapatero para aclarar el asunto. Según su versión, desde Moncloa le dijeron: "Si redactas una cosa aclarando todos esos puntos, se las hacemos llegar a los periódicos".

No sabemos lo que le parece a Savater que la comunicación llevara el membrete de Presidencia del Gobierno. Ni acabo de entender por qué ésta tenía que participar en la difusión de sus aclaraciones como si se tratara alguien desconocido que necesitase ayuda para llegar a los periódicos. En cualquier circunstancia, y más aún tal como está la cosa, si Savater hubiese convocado una rueda de prensa todos los medios habrían acudido sin dudarlo un segundo.

The European Airbus company, currently under fire from the United States for allegedly taking illicit government subsidies, has sought state funds from Spain to help it build an aircraft that will compete head-to-head with its US rival Boeing, the Spanish news agency Europa said on Sunday.

NO SABÍA que hace unos días las diputadas del Congreso se reunieron para una labor de alta política, como debe ser, que para eso las pagamos: elegir al diputado masculino más sexy (ganó el ministro de justicia, López Aguilar; el segundo fue Puigcercós, prueba evidente de que un exquisito gusto en la indumentaria y un cuidado diseño de sus pilosidades puede compensar el hecho de poseer una materia prima no especialmente apta para un desfile de modelos).

Manuel Trallero sí estaba al corriente de ese momento estelar del parlamentarismo ibérico, y escribe esto:

SAVATER: «Zapatero me dijo que recibió una oferta de ETA para dejar las armas». El subtítulo de la noticia de ABC afirma que el presidente del Gobierno hizo estas revelaciones a un grupo de amigos a los que también dijo que los etarras no habían pedido «contrapartidas políticas».

Y digo yo: ¿por qué, con la que ha estado cayendo, ha explicado estas cosas únicamente a un grupo de amigos y no a todo el país, o por lo menos al principal partido de la oposición con el que hasta ahora compartía la estrategia que dimanaba del pacto anti-terrorista? Vale que no considere al PP como amigo pero, ¿y nosotros? Los ciudadanos a los que prometió transparencia, ¿somos amigos o enemigos?

ACTUALIZACIÓN. Dos novedades importantes. Una, la aclaración de Fenando Savater a ABC:

Quiero dejar claro que en ningún momento se refirió el presidente del Gobierno a la existencia de una carta u oferta concreta, sino que hizo referencia a los diversos mensajes que por distintos conductos proceden del entorno etarra. Así pues, deduzco que me expresé inadecuadamente en la conversación telefónica que mantuve con su redactora, lo que ha dado lugar a un equívoco que lamento.

Dos, algo que no sólo se ha estado escondiendo durante un año, y muy especialmente en las últimas semanas en que la posible negociación con ETA ha estado dominando la agenda pública, sino que va en contra de las afirmaciones de varios miembros del gobierno:

ETA envió hace un año una carta al Gobierno español en la que incluía una propuesta para iniciar una negociación que abordase la "solución del conflicto" vasco.

La misiva fue dirigida al Ejecutivo socialista en torno al mes de mayo de 2004, al poco tiempo de llegar al poder, tal como se concluye de unos documentos incautados a ETA en Francia y que publica hoy "El Correo".

I'm leaving the left -- more precisely, the American cultural left and what it has become during our time together.

I choose this day for my departure because I can no longer abide the simpering voices of self-styled progressives -- people who once championed solidarity with oppressed populations everywhere -- reciting all the ways Iraq's democratic experiment might yet implode.

My estrangement hasn't happened overnight. Out of the corner of my eye I watched what was coming for more than three decades, yet refused to truly see. Now it's all too obvious. Leading voices in America's "peace" movement are actually cheering against self-determination for a long-suffering Third World country because they hate George W. Bush more than they love freedom.

Looking back at the 1960s and 1970s, when I grew up in Germany, one of the most striking things was that everyone talked about work and money. The country was infuriatingly materialistic. The old West Germany felt more like an economy than a country. It used to have a proper currency, the Deutschmark, but it lacked a proper political capital. At a time when the British believed in incomes policies, capital controls and state ownership, Germany was as laissez-faire an economy as you could find anywhere in Europe. The Germans were the Americans of Europe, as a friend remarked at the time. Everyone was brimming with confidence and the superiority that comes with the belief that you are running the world’s most superior economy. The 1970s were the heyday of Germany’s social market economy, the economic equivalent of having your cake and eating it.

Unification was supposed to make Germany even stronger. The opposite happened. The country’s political leadership mismanaged unification through forcing monetary union too early, at the wrong exchange rate, and on the basis of West Germany’s high social costs and bureaucratic rules. When I returned to Germany in the 1990s, what surprised me most was not the poor performance of the economy — this I expected. I was most shocked by the extraordinary loss of self-confidence among the political and business elites, combined with a poisonous cocktail of the three big As: anti-Americanism, anti-Semitism and anti-capitalism.

Azerbaijani protesters demanding free elections were beaten back Saturday by police, who arrested dozens as they broke up a banned rally in the oil-rich former Soviet republic on the Caspian Sea four days before the inauguration of a new pipeline, The Associated Press reported.

Tension between the government and the opposition in the tightly controlled country has increased since an October 2003 election in which Ilham Aliev replaced his late father, Geidar Aliev, as president in a vote the opposition said was marred by fraud. A parliamentary vote is scheduled for November.

Officials had forbidden the opposition to protest, citing security concerns four days ahead of the visit of foreign leaders who will attend a ceremony marking the opening of Azerbaijan’s portion of the U.S.-backed Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline.

The violence broke out as groups of protesters tried to defy the ban and make their way to a central square in the capital, Baku, shouting “Freedom!” and “Free elections!”

"George W. Bush has unleashed a tsunami on this region," a shrewd Kuwaiti merchant who knows the way of his world said to me. The man had no patience with the standard refrain that Arab reform had to come from within, that a foreign power cannot alter the age-old ways of the Arabs. "Everything here--the borders of these states, the oil explorations that remade the life of this world, the political outcomes that favored the elites now in the saddle--came from the outside. This moment of possibility for the Arabs is no exception." A Jordanian of deep political experience at the highest reaches of Arab political life had no doubt as to why history suddenly broke in Lebanon, and could conceivably change in Syria itself before long. "The people in the streets of Beirut knew that no second Hama is possible; they knew that the rulers were under the gaze of American power, and knew that Bush would not permit a massive crackdown by the men in Damascus."

My informant's reference to Hama was telling: It had been there in 1982, in that city of the Syrian interior, that the Baathist-Alawite regime had broken and overwhelmed Syrian society. Hama had been a stronghold of the Muslim Brotherhood, a fortress of the Sunni middle class. It had rebelled, and the regime unleashed on it a merciless terror. There were estimates that 25,000 of its people perished in that fight. Thenceforth, the memory of Hama hung over the life of Syria--and Lebanon. But the people in the plazas of Beirut, and the Syrian intellectuals who have stepped forth to challenge the Baathist regime, have behind them the warrant, and the green light, of American power and protection.

To venture into the Arab world, as I did recently over four weeks in Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq, is to travel into Bush Country. I was to encounter people from practically all Arab lands, to listen in on a great debate about the possibility of freedom and liberty. I met Lebanese giddy with the Cedar Revolution that liberated their country from the Syrian prison that had seemed an unalterable curse. They were under no illusions about the change that had come their way. They knew that this new history was the gift of an American president who had put the Syrian rulers on notice. The speed with which Syria quit Lebanon was astonishing, a race to the border to forestall an American strike that the regime could not discount. I met Syrians in the know who admitted that the fear of American power, and the example of American forces flushing Saddam Hussein out of his spider hole, now drive Syrian policy. They hang on George Bush's words in Damascus, I was told: the rulers wondering if Iraq was a crystal ball in which they could glimpse their future.

The Mukhabarat never extracted a verbal confession from Mr Muhammad during the four months he was held in a tiny cell in the headquarters. He said that he was interrogated by a Mukhabarat officer named Basim twice a day, each time being whipped with cables while suspended from the ceiling, his hands tied behind his back. He had his jaw, ribs and hands broken. Sometimes he was taken to the basement, strapped into an electric chair and given shock treatment. “I had nothing to confess to,” he said. “They said I worked for Mossad (the Israeli intelligence agency) but my only mistake was that I sold Bazoft a roll of film.” In January 1990, days before Mr Muhammad’s trial, the Mukhabarat inked his thumb and pressed it against a statement in lieu of a signature. He was charged under article 158 of Iraqi law and sentenced by a military court to life imprisonment. He was transferred to the notorious Abu Greeb penitentiary, west of Baghdad, where 7,000 political prisoners lived in constant fear of torture and execution. He spent the next three years in solitary confinement. He was taken out of his cell twice a week for beatings. He said that in the prison basement were deep pits, each a metre wide. Up to ten prisoners deemed guilty of disciplinary offences would be dropped into these pits and kept there for a week at a time. “Many died in those pits,” he said. Last summer Mr Muhammad had the top joint of the second finger of his left hand smashed off with an iron bar for insulting Saddam, an offence for which five years were added to his sentence.

LAS AUTORIDADES MILITARES FRANCESAS están investigando una violación por parte de sus soldados desplazados en Costa de Marfil:

L'état-major des armées a confirmé, vendredi 20 mai, qu'une double enquête a été ordonnée à la suite d'une plainte pour viol concernant quatre soldats de la force française "Licorne" , stationnée en Côte d'Ivoire. L'affaire se serait déroulée le 6 mai, dans le village de Madinani, situé dans la moitié nord du pays contrôlée par les adversaires du régime du président Laurent Gbagbo.

Une "enquête de commandement" a été ouverte, ainsi qu'une enquête judiciaire menée par la prévôté militaire, et un dossier a été transmis au procureur de Paris. Les faits concerneraient une jeune fille de ce village dont le tuteur a, dans un premier temps, déposé une plainte auprès des soldats de l'Onuci (les Forces de l'ONU en Côte d'Ivoire), 9 jours après le viol présumé. Celui-ci impliquerait quatre soldats âgés de 20 à 25 ans. On précise, de source militaire, que c'est un journal de l'opposition qui, le premier, a révélé cette affaire.

No está mal que se investiguen estas cosas, faltaría más. Pero cínico que es uno, no puedo evitar pensar que es un modo de hacer ver que las autoridades francesas puedan demostrar a sus críticos que "se preocupan" y así evitar investigar qué ocurrió en asuntos infinitamente más graves.

WHEN UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY GENERAL Kofi Annan quipped several years ago that he could "do business" with Saddam Hussein, he meant it figuratively. In light of the substantive charges coming out of the ever-expanding Oil-for-Food scandal, the throwaway line seems revealing or at least ironic.

"I think we have to take him literally," says Republican senator Norm Coleman, who is leading one of eight investigations into the corruption and mismanagement of the U.N.'s largest-ever humanitarian relief effort.

The basic outline of the scandal is simple: Saddam Hussein used the Oil-for-Food program to circumvent U.N. sanctions imposed after the Gulf war and to enrich himself and his allies. He did this by bribing leading journalists and diplomats and demanding kickbacks from those who profited from selling Iraqi oil. That he was able to do so indicates at least that the U.N. badly mismanaged the program it set up in December 1996. None of this is particularly astonishing. No one is surprised to learn that Saddam Hussein cheats, that politicians take bribes, and that the competence level of the U.N. bureaucracy is, well, suboptimal.

Nevertheless, the details of the Oil-for-Food scandal--who participated, and what they apparently did--are jaw-dropping. Vladimir Putin's chief of staff, Alexander Voloshin, appears to have accepted millions of dollars in oil-soaked bribes from Saddam Hussein. The same appears to be true of the former interior minister of France, Charles Pasqua, a close friend of President Jacques Chirac. And the same appears to be true of three high-ranking U.N. executives including Benon Sevan, handpicked by Kofi Annan to administer the Oil-for-Food program. Oil-for-Food money even went to terrorist organizations supported by the Iraqi regime and, according to U.S. investigators, might be funding the insurgency today.

Through seven years' worth of deals that should never have been made, compromises that should never have been struck, and concessions that should never have been granted, Oil-for-Food strengthened Saddam Hussein. What we know about all of this now is a fraction of what will eventually be uncovered. But even this limited understanding should mean an end to Kofi Annan's term as secretary general. The sad history of U.N. incompetence on Iraq generally and in the Oil-for-Food program specifically is enough to make you wonder why George W. Bush settled for John Bolton rather than, say, John Rocker to push for reform at the world body.

AMONG THE MANY BIZARRE ASPECTS of the U.N. Oil-for-Food program is its premise: If we, the international community, allow Saddam Hussein to take in more money by selling oil, we can end the suffering of the Iraqi people even while maintaining U.N. sanctions.

Saddam Hussein argued that Iraqis were dying because the sanctions deprived him of the money to save them. And while there is little doubt that the sanctions left Iraqis much poorer than they were before the Gulf war--annual incomes dropped nearly to a third of what they had been in 1990--it was less clear that Saddam Hussein was similarly destitute.

"Saddam's family profits from covert sales of Iraqi oil and dominance of the black market, where many of the donated medicines and food end up," said then-CIA director John Deutch in public testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on September 25, 1996. "Iraqi government funds are used to maintain lavish lifestyles. Baghdad, for example, has begun working on 48 new palaces and VIP residences during the past five years, increasing the total number of estates available to Saddam Hussein to at least 78."

This apparently explains the suicide car bombs that have been set off by remote control, even though a suicide bomber was at the wheel.

The unsubstantiated rumor led to rioting and death in Afghanistan and general turmoil and rage across the Islamic world. Mullahs issued fatwas and the more lunatic even declared a "holy war." What explains the unsubstantiated story and why the hysterical reaction?

The superficial answer is that we now live in a globalized village — united by the marriage of satellite communications with cheap consumer goods. Someone sneezes in Texas and a few minutes later a villager in upper Russia can say "bless you." What an "in-the-know" Beltway insider conjures up as buzz in the "Periscope" section of the magazine for his American readers can cause death and mayhem hours later 7,000 a miles away in the Hindu Kush.

Yet there is something far more to these bizarre events than mere "interconnectedness," or even media-savvy fundamentalists who have got the hang of Western telecommunications and know how to use them to stir up the mob.

There is not a necessary connection in the Middle East — or anywhere else — between the occasional appearance of technological sophistication and what we might call humanism, or the commitment to explain phenomena through reason and empiricism. We forget that far too often as we kow-tow to extremists and seek to apologize or fathom the holy protocols surrounding a religious text.

In the West, the wonder of a cell phone in some sense is the ultimate expression of a long struggle for the primacy of scientific reason, tolerance, critical consciousness, and free expression. That intellectual journey goes back to Galileo, Newton, and Socrates.

Everything from CDs to Starbucks that we take for granted is a representation of millions of past Western lives. These forgotten scientists, inventors, and entrepreneurs, along with other reformers in politics, journalism, economics, and religion, created our present liberal environment. Only its institutions led to our prosperous modernity.

Without them, thinkers cannot discuss ideas freely. They will not find legal protection for their accomplishments, status for their contributions, and profit for their benefactions — and thus would end up hopeless and adrift in a society such as present-day Syria, Iran, or Egypt.

That long odyssey is not so in the world of bin Laden or an Iranian theocrat — or the ignorant who stream out of the madrassas and Friday fundamentalist harangues along the Afghan-Pakistani border. These fist-shaking, flag-burning Islamic fascists all came late to the Western tradition and now cherry-pick its technology. As classic parasites, a Zawahiri or al-Zarqawi wants Western sophisticated weapons and playthings — without the bothersome foundations that made them all possible.

An Afghan who riots because he learns of a rumor in a Western magazine, and those like him who explode and behead in Iraq, are emblematic of this hypocrisy. Nothing they have accomplished in their lives, either materially or philosophically, would result in a free opinion magazine, much less the technology to send out the story instantaneously — or, in the case of al-Zarqawi, to have his murdering transmitted globally on the Internet.

Instead, our Afghan rioters, and the Islamist organizations that have endorsed them, live in the eighth century of rumor, sexual and religious intolerance, tribal chauvinism, and gratuitous violence — but now electrified by the veneer of the 21st-century civilization that is not their own, but sometimes fools the naïve that it is.

Yet all the illumination in the modern world — neon, fluorescent, or incandescent — cannot light up the illiberal Dark Age mind if it is not willing (or forced) to begin the long ordeal of democracy, tolerance, legality, and individual rights.

Despite cheap, accessible, and easy-to-operate consumer goods imported from the Westernized world, the thinking of a bin Laden or Muslim Brotherhood still leads back to swords, horses, and jihad, not ahead to iPods and Microsoft.

They want such things to use to destroy, but not along with them the institutions like democracy and freedom that would allow such progress in their own countries — and shortly make al Qaeda and the fundamentalists not merely irrelevant, but ridiculous as well. Thus, we can understand the increasing hatred of the United States and its policy of democratic idealism abroad that threatens to put them out of business.

As we learned on September 11, they try to kill us now with our own appurtenances before they are buried themselves under modernism, liberality, and freedom. That really is what this war is about: a last-ditch effort by primordial fascists to prevent the liberalization of the Muslim world and the union of Islamic society with the protocols found in the rest of the globe and which many in the Middle East prefer if given a chance.

EL PASADO JUEVES tuve el placer de asistir a la presentación del premio "Roda de Molí" (Rueda de Molino), que la Fundació Catalunya Oberta entregará semanalmente a políticos y demás personajes que con sus declaraciones o actuaciones pretendan que los demás comulguemos con eso, con ruedas de molino. Para que nos entendamos, es algo así como un fisking pero no de cuestiones opinables -como a veces ocurre en éstos- sino de datos fácilmente contrastables. Una iniciativa interesante para la que les auguro sobrecarga de trabajo; espero que estén preparados para la avalancha que se les viene encima.

Como quien dice casi no han empezado, y aparentemente ya les está costando algún disgusto. Uno de los últimos galardonados fue Zapatero, por las discrepancias entre los logros de su primer año de gobierno que detalló en un informe que él mismo presentó a primeros de abril, y los que enumeró en el parlamento durante el reciente debate del Estado de la Nación. Podéis leerlo en la propia página web de la Fundació (en catalán; si necesitáis ayuda con la traducción, Internostrum.com funciona razonablemente bien).

Pues bien, como comentó Joan Guitart y después Xavier Sala-i-Martín, es misma tarde habían recibido una airada llamada de La Moncloa pidiendo explicaciones por haber osado poner en evidencia al venerado líder.
