Iraqi police arrived at the bombing site first and found Zarqawi alive. The police put him on a stretcher. When US forces showed up Zarqawi was conscious enough to recognize them as US troops. He tried to roll off the stretcher. Caldwell says that Zarqawi was in very bad shape. He died shortly thereafter.
