“I want to do a mini Las Vegas Strip in Europe,” he commented. “I hope we can use the name Euro Vegas.” The project would be LVS’s first in Europe, adding to casino resorts in Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Singapore and Macao, the self-governing Chinese territory.

Mr Adelson confirmed on Thursday that he was in talks with the authorities in Barcelona and Madrid. He said he had also been in contact with Valencia and the Costa del Sol. However, he warned that LVS would seek major concessions on planning for the project, which he suggested could create 180,000 jobs.

“No private-sector company [in this industry] has made investments of this kind and we need the support of the government,” he said, calling on ministers to establish a top-level support group and to provide for proposals to receive approval within 60 days.
